Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Michigan rank first though fourth in this week’s AP poll, but Roddy Jones’ top four is a little different. Yes, he has Alabama No. 1, but he has Clemson No. 2.
“I think (Alabama is) the most proven team in the nation,” the ACC Network analyst said on CBS Sports Radio’s The DA Show. “They’ve looked the most steady. I think Clemson is right up there with them. I think Clemson is a better football than Michigan is, to be quite honest with you, because Clemson knows how to win football games. That’s what I think Alabama does as well. They know how to win. It doesn’t matter what kind of game they get into. If it’s a shootout, if it’s a one-score game, if they can’t score any points – they know how to win and they’re able to win. So Alabama is my No. 1. Clemson would be my No. 2 personally, but they don’t ask me to vote.”
Jones, though, isn’t necessarily down on Michigan (5-0). In fact, he was impressed with the Wolverines’ 14-7 win over then-No. 8 Wisconsin in Ann Arbor this past weekend.
“Wisconsin is a good football team,” Jones said. “Their offense may not be the most prolific, but they’re a good offense. They run the football well. It’s a typical Wisconsin offense. They’re not going to come out and throw the ball all over the yard. They’ve got to be dependent on running the football, and that’s what they are this year. So I’m impressed with Michigan. These ugly wins are what good teams are able to do, and Michigan got one. They made a play when it came down to it, so good for them.”
Clemson (5-0) plays Boston College (3-2) in Chestnut Hill this Friday, while Michigan plays its first road game of the season this Saturday. The Wolverines will face Rutgers (2-3), which is coming off a 58-0 loss to Ohio State. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET.
