The Pittsburgh Steelers stroll into Foxboro for the AFC Championship this Sunday, and if they have any hope of winning, their defense is going to have to have its best game of the season.
Players like second-year linebacker Bud Dupree are going to have to play lights out, which Bart Scott feels is very possible.
“Bud Dupree is every bit the player Whitney Mercilus is,” Scott said on CBS Sports Radio’s The DA Show. “He can’t get blocked.”
Maybe, DA said, but the Steelers don’t have a defensive player on par with, say, Jadeveon Clowney.
“Listen, let me tell you something: Bud Dupree is going to be a better player than Jadeveon Clowney,” Scott said. “I guarantee you. Jadeveon Clowney has 6.5 sacks. 46tackles. What the hell are we talking about? What is y’all looking at that I don’t see? Damn, 46 tackles when you an outside linebacker? Come on.”
But Clowney was a one-man wrecking crew this year without J.J. Watt, no?
“I would take Whitney Mercilus before I take him,” Scott said. “Guess who had more sacks this year? Guess who had more tackles this year? Guess who had 12.5 sacks last year? Sometimes you crown the wrong dude. I was one of those dudes. Ten games, 114 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two picks – in 10 games.”
“Who popped off the screen more?” Scott continued. “Clowney or Mercilus? What Mercilus was doing was criminal. He committed two felonies.”
DA wondered if Scott simply doesn’t like Clowney.
“I do, I do,” Scott insisted. “But I don’t like him better than Mercilus.”
