How you perceive a television show often depends on your age and the era in which you view it. Far too often, shows that you enjoyed in your youth don’t resonate once you get older – either because you have changed or because the subject matter was only funny or relevant in that specific era.

In Living Color, a sketch comedy series, is not one of those shows. In fact, it’s as funny and as relevant today as it was when it first aired in the early-mid 1990s.

In living Color is like really good porn,” comedian Shawn Wayans said on CBS Sports Radio’s The DA Show. “If you put on like a good porn, it holds up. When does it ever go out of style? It’s timeless. So yeah, no, I love In Living Color. That was my comedy college. All the guys on that show were so great and so talented.”

That includes Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans, Kim Wayans, Kelly Coffield Park, Tommy Davidson, and Jamie Foxx. Jennifer Lopez, Rosie Perez, Chris Rock, and Molly Shannon also appeared on the show.

“Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, Jamie, Tommy – oh, my god,” Wayans said. “The laughs that we had – see, you guys got the laughs after we shot the show. The laughs that me, Keenen, Damon, Tommy, Jim, Jamie, all those guys had, Kim, Kelly, were so much harder than the ones that actually got put on the screen. A lot of the stuff came from playing around behind the scenes. It ended up sparking an idea. It was amazing.”

The show was known for tackling controversial and racy issues head-on. DA questioned whether some of the material would fly in today’s market.

“Looking at the landscape for television now, I don’t think so,” Wayans said. “But if we came across someone as brave as Fox was back then – they let us do our thing. Whoever would let us do our thing, I think we could bring that kind of comedy back.”
