Cam Newton found himself in hot water Wednesday, this after making a sexist remark toward a female reporter. The reporter, Jourdan Rodrigue, asked about Devin Funchess’ route-running ability, to which Newton replied, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny.”

But not really.

Newton may not believe it, but a lot of women know a lot about football. Spice Adams can attest to that.

“My wife is probably the most avid football fan,” the former NFL defensive tackle and current NFL and college football analyst said on CBS Sports Radio’s The DA Show. “I played football with both of her brothers in Detroit in high school, and you’re not very good at football until you can have your wife break down game film with you.”

Adams, 37, starred at Penn State and was a second-round draft pick in 2003. He played for the 49ers until 2006 and spent the final five seasons of his career in Chicago.

It’s tough to play nine years in the NFL, but Adams did it. His wife, Andenika, may have had something to do with that.

“My wife would be watching film with me and she’d say, ‘I think the trap is coming. You probably should watch out for the trap,’” Adams recalled. “She’s watching pass-protection with me (and giving advice). My wife is on it. I think my wife could play defensive end in the National Football League right now. She understands protections. She understands blocking schemes.”

What’s “funny” is that Newton often doesn’t. He has 19 interceptions over his last 19 games.

“Cam should give me a call or come over to our house and watch the game film and have my wife break it down for him,” Adams said. “He’ll be a heck of a lot better with my wife putting the red dot on him. We have a clicker at home that has the laser on it, and she can point out where the pass protection is going to go, if the safety is going to be over top, if it’s going to be double-coverage. My wife is on it, man. Seriously. It’s crazy at my house.”
